Cost of care questions
How much should I plan for long-term care?
Many planners use about three years of care as a starting point. At 2025 national medians that's roughly $220,000 for assisted living or $345,000 for a semi-private nursing home room in today's dollars, before cost growth. Your numbers depend on where you live and the care you prefer.
How fast do long-term care costs rise?
Costs have historically grown faster than general inflation in many years. In the 2025 CareScout survey, assisted living rose 5% and in-home care 3% from the prior year. We default the calculator to 3%, and you can change it.
What if I need in-home care instead of a nursing home?
Most people prefer to receive care at home. In 2025, non-medical in-home care cost a median of $35 an hour. Full-time care can cost more than a nursing home.
